BAD REPUTATION: Pierre de Gaillande sings Georges Brassens in English.

BAD REPUTATION is composer/singer/songwriter Pierre de Gaillande's latest musical venture. It is a translation of the lyrics of iconic French anarchist poet/singer Georges Brassens into English. Pierre is currently at work on an illustrated book of the translated poems along with a CD of the songs performed in English, to be released jointly by Barbes Records and Ugly Duckling Presse in June 2010. He has begun performing these songs at venues around New York and elsewhere with a band of talented musicians.

"Ever since I was a child," explains Pierre, "my father, who is now a French professor living in Los Angeles, was a fan of Brassens. I grew up hearing his music around the house constantly. Growing up in California with a French father and an American mother, I was always stuck between two cultures, and striving to understand what it meant to be French. To a large extent, the music and philosophy of Brassens defined 'Frenchness' for me. As I get older, I realize that these ideals have informed and guided me throughout life. The idea for this translation came to me when my father sent me a translation of one of Brassens’ texts and asked me to put it to music."

With BAD REPUTATION, Pierre has undertaken a daunting task; to translate a collection of Brassens' songs, strictly adhering to the rhyme scheme, meter, and meaning of the original texts, while preserving their musicality and lyricism in English. Moreover, he is attempting to convince legions of loyal, stubborn Brassens fans that his versions of the songs in English maintain the spirit and fire, and respect the sacred richness of the original French texts. No easy feat, yet more and more lovers of Brassens are being converted to the cause. 


Brassens has been translated into many languages worldwide, yet attempts to do so into English have fallen short. This project is a chance for the English speaking world to discover the work of this amazing songwriter, poet, and individual.



Among the many gifted musicians involved in this project are David Spinley, clarinet, Christian Bongers, bass, Tony Jarvis, bass clarinet and guitar, Quentin Jennings, charango, flute, and xylophone, and Gerald Menke, lap steel and dobro.

BAD REPUTATION (La Mauvaise Reputation): Pierre de Gaillande chante Georges Brassens en anglais.

BAD REPUTATION (La Mauvaise Reputation) est le dernier projet entrepris par l'auteur/chanteur/compositeur Pierre de Gaillande.
 Il traduit en anglais les œuvres de Georges Brassens, incontournable poète-chanteur anarchiste français. Pierre travaille actuellement à un livre illustré des poésies traduites de l'auteur français ainsi qu'un CD de ses chansons, interprétées en anglais qui seront publies par Barbes Records et Ugly Duckling Presse en avril 2010. Il a déjà chanté ces chansons dans différents sites de New-York et d'ailleurs, accompagné d'un groupe de musiciens doués.


Dans les premier souvenirs de Pierre grandissant à Paris et puis en Californie, la musique de Brassens remplissait la maison, grâce a la dévotion infini de son père pour Brassens. Au fil des années, Pierre pris parties a mainte groupes en tant que musicien et compositeur, mais les mélodies et poèmes inoubliables de Brassens ne l’ont jamais quitter de l’esprit. En 2008, son père lui a envoyé “le mécréant,” poème de Brassens traduit en anglais, en suggérant que Pierre l’accompagne en musique. Ainsi commença une obsession d’emmener la musique de Brassens au monde Anglophone.

Avec ce projet, Pierre a entrepris une tache ardue: traduire une sélection des chansons du grand Georges, en adhérant strictement au schéma des rimes, au rythme et au sens des textes originaux, tout en conservant en anglais leur musicalité et leur lyrisme. En plus, il essaye de convaincre la légion de fanatiques de Brassens têtues et fidèles que ces versions anglaise maintiennent le feu et l’esprit, et respectent la richesse sacrée des textes français originaux. Pas du gâteaux, mais de plus en plus d’amateurs de Brassens sont convertis a la cause.

Brassens a été traduit en de nombreuses langues dans le monde mais les tentatives vers l'anglais ont généralement tourné court. Ce projet est donc une chance réelle, pour le monde anglophone, de découvrir le travail de ce compositeur, poète et individu exceptionnel.
